Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Perennial herbs, sometimes woody at base.

Stems: Stems prostrate or ascending, glabrous, pubescent, or papillose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades unequal, terete (cylindrical) or flat. Margins entire to undulate. Petioles dilated at base and clasping the stem to form a sheath. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in solitary or clustered in the leaf axils, sessile or pedicellate, each one subtended by 1 or more scarious bracts. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx of 5 sepals, shortly connate at base, unequal, margins scarious, sometimes with a dorsal mucro behind apex, inner surface colored. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 5 to numerous, adnate to upper edge of floral tube. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovules 2 to numerous; style 1.

Fruit: Capsules with circumscissile dehiscience; with a persistent perianth; the operculum flat; ovoid or subglobose. Seeds 1 to numerous; black; triangular or reniform; the surface smooth or patterned; often papillose.

Notes

  • A genus of about 20 species, some of the widely distributed, but 12 species endemic to Australia. Name derived from the Greek treis, three, and anthemis, flower, in reference to the 3-flowered inflorecense of some species.
